QQSmile Deflexion game is a chess-like board game that has two built in lasers and movable Egyptian-themed game pieces that have embedded mirrors which can be position to bounce the laser light around the board and hit opponent pieces.Players alternate turns moving Egyptian themed mirrored pieces around the playing field after which they fire their laser beam with the goal of illuminating their opponent's pieces to eliminate them from the game. It has computer, network and self paly modes .It's fun and easy to learn because all the pieces, the pharaoh, the Djeds, the Pyramids and the Obelisks move or rotate in the same way.To play, players alternate moving their pieces around the board. Some pieces have mirrors and some do not. Bounding the board is a raised frame into which are built two lasers, one for each player. The game pieces include a "pharaoh", obelisks, and pyramids with mirrors. After each move, The laser of this player starts. The beam bounces from mirror to mirror around the playing field. The challenge is to protect one's own pharaoh while maneuvering to "light up" the opposing player's pharaoh. Scott says: I love this game just because it is guaranteed to turn heads all set-up anywhere in public. The game has lasers. Let me say that again: the game has cool lasers.
The premise of the game is to bounce your laser around using a variety of mirrored pieces into a particular piece on your opponent’s side (the Pharaoh). The theme is loosely Egyptian but since QQSmile Deflexion is really just an abstract, it is nothing more than superficial cosmetics. Now each player is given the same pieces and the board comes preset in a certain fashion (which can be customized or chosen between two provided scenarios). The pawns range from a Pyramid with a single 45° mirror and two vulnerable sides, a Djed with two 45° mirrors and no vulnerabilities, an obelisk with no mirrors (one time use blocking piece), and most importantly the Pharaoh which is the single highly vulnerable “King” piece.
Each player will take turns maneuvering his/her pieces by either moving one in any direction orthogonally or diagonally, rotating 90°, or with the special case of the Djed, swapping places with another piece either enemy or friendly. After this the laser is fired and bounces around from mirror to mirror at 90° angles until it comes to rest upon a wall or the un-mirrored surface of another pawn. When pawns are struck they light up in a devious manner to display their destruction; something I find highly entertaining if not flashy.
The game is very gimmicky since it is basically just a little abstract/brain-burner with some added flair. However I think QQSmile Deflexion was very well made and exhibits a certain level of captivation. Some analysis paralysis can ensue when players try to calculate out the path of all their given moves. On occasion I have also seen a player make one bad move and get stuck on defensive play or counter-attack for the rest of the game. I think this is more a fault of the genre than the particular game itself however.
As for the components, ignoring the painfully obligatory mention of the laser once again, the game is done very extravagantly. The entire thing from pawns to board is hard plastic and is also actually quite large. I was shocked to see how big the game was once it arrived. This causes everything to appear very grand and lavish in play. Did I mention there were lasers?
Michael Vasel says: A game that uses lasers as part of the game play sounds really cool!
Thankfully, it turns out that there is more to this game than just the novelty value. I have registered and played it against several opponents on network and the computer, and the game plays very well. There is enough variety in the different setups you can choose, and the game can take truly surprising turns unless you are very alert.
The game is of course in the Abstract category, since no amount of luck is involved. It is perfectly symmetrical, there are no dice, and there is no hidden information: winning is not a matter of luck, but purely one of skill.
Having said that, I think it is clear that the starting player has an advantage in this game. Unlike a game like DVONN, where the game is deliberately slightly asymmetric in an attempt to offset this advantage, it is possible to take the initiative from the beginning in this game - keeping it is then of course not always easy.
Happily, both of my kids enjoy the game as well, although of course at a different level. They love the laser aspect, which engages them in the game and encourages them to stick with the game for longer than they would with other abstracts such as GIPF - one of my favourite games ever. The challenge of figuring out what path the light beam will follow once the laser is activates keeps them interested for a long time.
All in all, I can recommend this game for anyone that wants an abstract game with an interesting twist - whether it's for adults or for (large) kids.
Petter T. says: QQSmile Deflexion is aesthetically pleasing. Semi-translucent pieces light up when struck by a laser eliminating any question as to what piece is destroyed. The pieces have an Egyptian feel to them, with what resembles a pharaoh as the chess-equivalent "King," obelisks as guards, and mysterious mirror pieces which are used as your only form of attack for this game.
Also, the game play is straightforward. A few movement restrictions are essentially the only elements of confusion to the game. You can move, or twist 90-degrees, but you cannot move *and* twist. You cannot enter your opponent's colored squares which occupy one extreme of the board. Only the large door-like mirrors can switch places with another piece. Etc. The rules are quickly absorbed and there will be very little arguments as to what moves are legal.
Games a fast-paced and exciting. While you are attempting to quickly maneuver to victory, you must have a keen eye for your opponent's desire to do the same. Most times getting lost in your own sequence of moves will result in your own defeat. No worries, though, games are quick enough to allow for your vindication in the next round.
